Childcare Support Comparison

Compare Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare support, and funded free-hours childcare to see which route could leave you with the lowest out-of-pocket childcare cost.

Compare childcare support

This tool only models funded free-hours schemes for England. Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit support can still be compared elsewhere in the UK.

Example: 24 = 2 years old, 36 = 3 years old.

Used to value free childcare hours using your own effective hourly cost.

This keeps the form practical. Instead of trying to fully recreate GOV.UK eligibility, it uses the most important blockers and caps for a planning comparison.

Important notes

  • This tool is designed as a practical comparison estimate. It is not a formal benefits decision engine.
  • Free childcare hours in this tool are modelled for England only. Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support can apply more widely across the UK, subject to their own rules.
  • Universal Credit and Tax-Free Childcare cannot be claimed at the same time, but either can be combined with free childcare hours for extra paid hours if you are eligible.
  • The free-hours saving is valued using your own entered hourly childcare cost, based on monthly bill divided by monthly paid hours.
  • This version is best for comparing one childcare place or one main childcare bill. Complex multi-child households may need the official GOV.UK childcare calculator for a final answer.

Childcare Support Comparison UK

This childcare support comparison tool helps you estimate how different childcare help routes compare in practice. It can compare Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare costs, and the main free childcare hours schemes in England.

The goal is simple: show which route could leave you with the lowest monthly childcare bill based on the figures you enter.

What this calculator compares

  • No support, as a baseline
  • Tax-Free Childcare on its own
  • Universal Credit childcare support on its own
  • Free childcare hours on their own
  • Free childcare hours plus Tax-Free Childcare
  • Free childcare hours plus Universal Credit childcare support

How the estimate works

You enter your monthly childcare bill and the number of paid childcare hours used each month. The calculator uses those figures to estimate your effective hourly childcare cost. It then uses that hourly cost to estimate the value of any free childcare hours.

For Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support, the tool applies the relevant support rate and cap to the remaining paid childcare bill after any free hours have been used.

Important limitations

This is a planning tool, not a formal GOV.UK eligibility checker. Childcare support rules can depend on factors such as your nation, the child’s exact age, disability status, adjusted net income, working pattern, migration status, and whether a provider is approved.

The free-hours part of this tool is intentionally limited to England. Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support can still be compared elsewhere in the UK, but free-hours schemes outside England are not modelled here.

This calculator provides general estimates only and does not constitute financial, tax, legal, welfare, or benefits advice.

Childcare Support Comparison – FAQs

Can I compare Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit together?

The tool compares both, but it does not combine them because you cannot claim Universal Credit childcare support and Tax-Free Childcare at the same time.

Can free childcare hours be used with Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit?

Yes, free childcare hours can still reduce your bill first, and this tool then estimates Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit support on the remaining paid hours.

Does this calculator work for the whole UK?

It compares Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit childcare support across the UK, but the funded free-hours part is modelled for England only.

Is this exact for households with several children?

It is best used as a practical estimate for one main childcare place or one main childcare bill. More complex households may need the official GOV.UK childcare calculator.
